Indomie has become synonymous with instant noodles in Indonesia. Even though the brand now offers a huge range of flavors, its Mi Goreng flavor remains the bestseller - an icon that has helped turn Indonesia into the second-biggest noodle-eating country in the world. Who created this Mi Goreng phenomenon? Nunuk Nuraini. Indomie was launched by the Salim Group, one of Indonesia's biggest conglomerates in 1972, the year after Japanese entrepreneur Momofuku Ando created the instant Cup Noodles. Indomie released its first product called Kaldu Ayam, a chicken-flavored instant noodle soup. In 1982, Indomie introduced a new flavor called Mi Goreng - its first dry noodle variant inspired by the Indonesian fried noodle dish of the same name. The flavor has found popularity not just across Southeast Asia but also in Australia, Nigeria, and other countries around the world. Nunuk Nuraini was the woman behind this genius creation. Graduated with a food technology degree, Nuraini was responsible for flavor development at Indomie for almost 30 years. Besides the Mi Goreng flavor, she also worked on other Indomie flavors - Soto, Chicken Curry, Sambal Matah, and Rendang. Unfortunately in early 2021, Indomie announced that she had passed away. Many mourned her death and took to social media to offer their respects and condolences. They thanked her for her legacy and labeled her as the Mother of Indomie.
