The soundtrack to our Disney memories — Lea Salonga captivated us with her angelic voice and brought to life some of the best songs from our childhood. Born in Manila, Philippines, she began her career in musical theater at the age of 7, starring in local productions. Her international breakthrough came in 1989 as the leading role in Cameron Mackintosh’s world premiere production of “Miss Saigon” in London’s West End. She was only 18 years old. In 1991, she reprised her “Miss Saigon” role and made her Broadway debut at the Broadway Theatre. For her performance, she became the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award. Shortly after, Lea was invited to sing for Disney. Just like any other little girl who grew up watching Disney films, it was a dream come true for her, and she wanted to do it justice. From Aladdin to Mulan, Lea graciously serenaded us with “A Whole New World” and “Reflection”, which earned her the title, “Disney Legend” in 2011. She carried the weight of responsibility as she knew the importance of capturing raw emotions through songs. Especially, for movies by Disney that live on forever. #IconQuote
