On June 12, 1898, the Filipino flag was officially unfurled as the national anthem was played for the first time in public. Although the date is recognized today as the country’s independence day, it would take several decades for the Philippines to achieve true independence. Since the latter part of the 16th century, the Philippines had been colonized by the Spanish. But by the late 19th century, Filipino revolutionaries had begun their mission to seek independence with Emilio Aguinaldo leading the rebellion. By April 1898, the Spanish-American War broke out and the U.S. army had defeated the Spanish in the Battle of Manila Bay. With the U.S in control of the Spanish colony, Filipino revolutionaries could return from exile to reclaim their country. Unfortunately, the Philippines failed to win international recognition of its independence, especially from the U.S. and Spain. As a result of the previous battle, the Philippines was considered a U.S. territory. It would take a new revolt and several more decades before the country would finally be granted full independence on July 4, 1946. Prior to 1964, June 12 had been celebrated as Flag Day in the country. It was only in 1965 when former President Diosdado Macapagal issued a proclamation that formally recognized the date as the Philippines’ Independence Day.
