A part of the Orconuma Meteorite, a recent donation and the first ever meteorite in the National Geological and Paleontological Collections, is now on public display at the Godofredo Alcasid Function Hall located on the ground floor of the National Museum of Natural History at the National Museum of the Philippines Complex in Rizal Park, Manila. This afternoon, a short launch activity took place at the National Museum of Natural History to formally present the Orconuma to colleagues, peers, various interest groups and the general public. In his welcome remarks, Deputy-Director General for Museums Jorell Legaspi hopes that this donation will open opportunities for the National Museum and its peers to participate in global conversations that will enrich the Filipino people’s understanding on the vast space we now share in this universe. In a statement read by Christian Cruz, representative of donors John Higgins and Jasper Spencer, the donors convey their commitment in sharing the tangible piece to the Filipino people and hopes that present and future generations will be inspired to study meteoritical research and would also realize the importance of meteorites and its role in space exploration. In response to the statement, Director-General Jeremy Barns asserted that the National Museum will honor and commit to the wishes of the donors and looks forward in collecting more objects and specimens to be featured in the National Museum of Natural History, and soon, in a new National Planetarium. This donation was facilitated by geologist Aubrey Whymark, who delivered the meteorite fragment to the National Museum last July 8. Visit the National Museum of Natural History to see the Orconuma Meteorite up-close and personal. We are open from Tuesdays to Sundays, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission is FREE and walk-in visitors are accepted.
