A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. But this basketball icon’s name is one many would recognize the moment they see it. With five championships, two Olympic gold medals, and an NBA MVP honor, Kobe Bryant is undoubtedly one of the greatest basketball players of all time. But did you know what inspired his name? Bryant, whose nickname on the court was ‘Black Mamba’, said in 2018 that his name was not just inspired but actually based on the Japanese beef delicacy. His parents saw Kobe beef on the menu of a Japanese restaurant and loved it so much they named their son Kobe. But unlike the meat, his name is pronounced as “ko-bee”. Even more surprising is Bryant’s lesser-known middle name that may come as a surprise to many people. Although it may seem unexpected, Bryant’s middle name “Bean” was actually a homage to his father’s nickname “Jellybean” during his NBA days. Who would have thought that a person so legendary would have a name related to food? #ThinkYouKnow #KobeBryantDay
