Despite being used to describe “plain” and/or “common”, real Vanilla is anything but plain or common! Vanilla is a spice derived from an orchid of the same name that is becoming increasingly rare due to how complex and difficult it is to grow and harvest. Like with tea or coffee, its taste and profile varies from each species and from where it is grown. Nowadays, commercial vanilla flavouring is made with synthetic compound which is cheaper to produce as compared to real vanilla that comes with a hefty price tag and a shorter shelf life. If you see any black specks on vanilla-flavored food, you know you’re getting the real deal! 🤍
