We take so many of our liberties for granted. But when you think about it, the simple act of having cup of coffee at a café with your friend, on a whim, is a luxury afforded to us by our nation’s freedom. Owning a business, having land to plant coffee on, having the right to own land for agriculture, having the capability to trade coffee and drink whatever coffee we wish, being able to gather as groups of people in public places and being able to freely express ourselves — all liberties we are able to enjoy as free people of an independent nation. 123 years ago, valiant men and women, our fellow Filipinos, put their lives on the line to fight for the independence we have come to enjoy. May we protect it with our very own lives and do what we can to safeguard these liberties for the generations that follow.
