Cultural Cache Online: Episode 9 featuring “Allegorical Harpoon” by National Artist Napoleon V. Abueva, with Toym Imao October is #MuseumsandGalleriesMonth! In this month’s episode, learn about a sculpture that was one of the first acquisitions of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Joining us this month is artist and educator Toym Leon Imao, who will tell us about the work of his mentor, National Artist Napoleon Abueva. About the artist Napoleon Abueva (1930-2018), National Artist for Visual Arts, studied at the University of the Philippines (UP) School of Fine Arts as a scholar of Pura Villanueva Kalaw in 1953. He apprenticed with sculptor Fidel Araneto and was mentored by Guillermo Tolentino in UP. Under the Smith Mundt-Fulbright grant, he earned his masters degree at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 1955. He also took graduate units in art history at Harvard University in 1956. He was a former dean and professor in UP College of Fine Arts from 1978 to 1989, and was honored Professor Emeritus in 2003. Abueva's works won various awards from the Art Association of the Philippines from 1951 to 1974. Among his awards were, the Republic Cultural Heritage Award (1966), International Sculpture Competition from the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (1953), Most Outstanding Alumnus of the UP School of Fine Arts (1958), Ten Outstanding Young Men Awardee (1959), Republic Award for Sculpture (1962), and CCP Centennial Honors for the Arts (1999). About the resource person Toym Imao (b.1968) finished his bachelor's degree in architecture at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1992 and master’s degree in sculpture at the Rinehart School of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art in Maryland, USA, in 2012. He is a professor at the UP College of Fine Arts and has participated in exhibitions in the Philippines and USA.
