Ask any wrestling fan for their opinion on one of the most controversial moments in WWE history and they are likely to answer one occasion: The Montreal Screwjob. It was the result of a long-running feud that ultimately ended in a ‘screwjob’. At the peak of the Attitude Era in 1997, new stars like Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin were on the rise. In comparison, Bret “Hitman” Hart had been in WWE for well over a decade at that point, and WWE CEO Vince McMahon had the opinion ...that Hart wasn’t going to last any longer. Hart struck a deal to enter rival company World Championship Wrestling (WCW) instead. But that left a crucial issue. He had been in the world title scene for years and had to leave the championship in Michaels’ hands. In front of a hometown crowd in Montreal, McMahon ‘screwed’ Hart over by manipulating a match between Hart and Michaels. Although pre-determined matches are common, Hart had clearly stated he did not want to lose in his home country of Canada. He was supposed to lose or forfeit the title to Michaels at a later date but McMahon’s betrayal took place unexpectedly. Immediately after the loss, Hart went straight to McMahon and gave him an uppercut punch that would leave McMahon with a visible black eye for a long time. The long-running feud between the two lasted for years and although Hart ultimately made a comment that the two retained a good relationship, the same can’t be said for McMahon. Uncover the rest of Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart’s iconic moments on stage in HISTORY’s Biography: WWE Legends premiering tonight at 8:05pm. #ThinkYouKnow #WWE #BretHart #Hitman #WWELegends #Wrestling #AttitudeEra #VinceMcMahon
