From the British colonial rule to the independence of Malaya, this historic restaurant stood witness to much of Malaysia’s rich history. The original Coliseum Cafe first opened its doors in 1921 on the streets of Kuala Lumpur as a Western colonial-themed restaurant. Located next door to its sister establishment the Coliseum Theatre, it was meant to be a place customers could have a meal before or after going to the cinema. It had a classy atmosphere with antiquated furniture and decoration of advertisements from its original decades. Serving a fusion of Western and Hainanese cuisine, the restaurant originally began as an exclusive dining establishment popular among the British colonial crowd. By the 1950s, local planters and tin miners reportedly started having meals here on Friday evenings to discuss anti-communist strategies. As decades went by, the restaurant became more casual and family-friendly. The restaurant was patronized by various people including Malaysia’s founding father, first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and acclaimed cartoonist Lat, also known as Mohammad Nor Khalid. Although the original Coliseum Cafe outlet has since closed its doors before it was able to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021, the memories made in the historic eatery will remain close to its patrons' hearts forever.
