Today, we commemorate the birth anniversary of National Artist for music Antonino Buenaventura. Antonino Buenaventura was a composer, conductor, and teacher. At the National Music Festival, his tone poem orchestra composition, By the Hillside, won first prize for most original composition. By the Hillside is programmatic in form and essence. Inspired by Buenaventura’s sojourn at the Philippine Military Academy before World War II, the work conjures images of vast, green, rolling landscapes. The music is calm and unhurried, the pace easy, evoking a pastoral ambience.
