Earlier today, the National Museum of the Philippines hosted the launch of the book "Indigenous Archaeology in the Philippines: Decolonizing Ifugao History" by Dr. Stephen B. Acabado and Mr. Marlon M. Martin. The event was attended by guests from various government agencies and academic institutions. Representatives from various consular offices were also present at the launch. One highlight of the launch was the formal turnover of Philippine archaeological specimens from the Fowler Museum of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) through Dr. Acabado. Comprised of wood and bone samples, this set is the first of the upcoming batches of Philippine specimens to be repatriated to the country. During the launch, Dr. Acabado and Mr. Martin recounted their book's journey which they call as a "slow archaeology" movement, involving not only archaeological diggings and recovery of material evidence but also years of immersion in the Ifugao community. They both hope that the book, backed with years of scientific data, will help correct prejudices on Ifugao communities and their culture and foster a greater appreciation of indigenous cultures in the Philippines. For the very first time also, the guests to the launch were invited to an open house of the repositories of the National Archaeological Collections. The halls, all named in memory of the pioneers of Philippine anthropology and archaeology, serve as the storage areas of various artifacts and specimens retrieved by the National Museum of the Philippines through the years. We hope that through these activities, we can continuously raise heritage consciousness and appreciation among the Filipinos through the lens of archaeology. #IndigenousArchaeology #DecolonizingIfugaoHistory #NationalMuseumPH
