The National Museum of the Philippines presents a paper online at the conference, "Curation and Conservation: Dress and Textiles" in Museums hosted by the Centre of Conservation and Restoration in Turin, Italy. As we celebrate Museums and Galleries Month and the 120th founding anniversary of the #NationalMuseumPH, the curatorial team of the Hibla ng Lahing Filipino Travelling Exhibition will be joining the annual international conference of the Association of Dress Historians on 21 - 22 October 2021. Ethnology Division Curator Marites Paz-Tauro and Exhibitions Division head Allan Alvarez will represent the team for the presentation. They will talk about the challenges and lessons learned from the Pineapple and Silk Cloth Traveling Exhibition during the lunch event on 22 October 2021. It was the first major traveling exhibition designed in-house by a team of researchers, designers, and fabricators of the NMP. Launched in 2017 at the Philippine Embassy in London, it eventually traveled to Lisbon, Madrid, Frankfurt, Washington DC, New York, and Honolulu the following year. In 2019, the exhibition was brought around Tokyo, Bangkok, and Singapore in Asia. It was also installed in Prague, Geneva, San Francisco, and Buenos Aires in the same year. The project would have been concluded in 2020 but due to travel restrictions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, its final destinations in Asia and Europe were cancelled. Having encountered challenges and difficulties in the various stages of the three-year program, the team nevertheless saw it as an opportunity to strengthen the partnership of the National Museum with the local weaving and embroidery communities. Moreover, the program enabled the expansion of its network with the national and international organizations, acknowledging the presence and key role of Filipinos overseas in making known our heritage. Today, 16 October, is the last day to sign up for Curation and Conservation: Dress and Textiles in Museums, which will take place in partnership with The Association of Dress Historians on 21 and 22 October.
