It’s a kitchen staple for many Southeast Asian households. If you’re in the mood for canned baked beans, tuna, or sardines, Ayam Brand has you covered. Despite its name hinting that it's a local product, did you know the brand was founded by a Frenchman? That man was Alfred Clouet. In 1892, Alfred Clouet registered an import-export firm by the name A. Clouet & Co. in Singapore that focused on importing premium products like French perfumes and Bordeaux wines. But sales were not hitting targets. So Clout decided to try another import - canned food. These were the times before refrigerators became widely accessible and canned food was considered luxury items for the wealthy. But Clouet wanted to break that barrier. He created a logo with his name and the iconic rooster and started producing tinned sardines in 1899. It was a hit among the masses. Local traders and regular consumers enjoyed the goods but found it difficult to pronounce the name “Clouet.” They started calling the brand “chop ayam” which translates to “chicken brand” in the Malay language. And so, the company decided to officially change its name to “Ayam Brand” shortly before World War II broke out. In 1954, the Denis Group took over the brand and started expanding the brand’s portfolio and spreading its reach beyond Asia. Today, Ayam Brand is headquartered in Singapore but is mainly manufactured in Malaysia with factories also in Vietnam and Indonesia. What’s your favorite Ayam Brand product? #ThinkYouKnow
