Silent Sky by playwright Lauren Gunderson is based on the true story of astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt who, together with a group of female scientists, was working as a “computer” (data entry clerk) at Harvard Observatory College.
Leavitt made astonishing discoveries as she mapped the distance between the stars, the earth, and other galaxies despite women being forbidden from using the observatory’s telescope. As a result, Leavitt laid the foundations for more known astronomers like Edwin Hubble (the man said to have discovered the cosmos) to succeed in their own research.
REP Artistic Director Joy Virata did not disappoint in bringing together the most captivating performers in a simple, yet creative stage. Cathy Azanza-Dy plays the lead role of Henrietta Leavitt, with Caisa Borromeo as her conservative sister Margaret Leavitt. Joining the cast are Naths Everette and Shiela Francisco who play as Williamina Fleming and Annie Cannon - Leavitt’s colleagues.
Surprisingly, this science bio-drama won’t bore you with scientific jargons, but it will make you laugh at the characters’ witty puns! Adding to the humor is the cute romance between Leavitt and Peter Shaw who is played by Topper Fabregas. The transition of the scenes were smoothly executed and one cannot help but be amazed at the stage’s backdrop of gleaming stars.
Silent Sky is indeed a story that harmonizes science, history, family, and love. It highlighted a passionate woman who chose not to be silent in sharing her scientific findings even if it means breaking social norms.
