Fragrance 101: How to Find Your Signature Scent
by Angelique Borja

While perfumes have their distinct scents, choosing the fragrance that best describes you is quite a meticulous journey as each scent reacts differently on one’s skin. Perfume is an extension of our personality and an accessory to complete our look. This is why others tend to remember someone with just a smell of the fragrance they usually wear.

People have their favorite perfumes because the scent is connected deep within their memories and experiences. Our choice of fragrance is closely associated with our style and character which is why our signature scent is also our personal branding. With a plethora of perfumes in stores, here’s a basic guide to help you with finding your signature scent.

Familiarize yourself with fragrance notes

The very first thing is to understand the categorization of scents. Learn that perfumes are constructed into three parts: top notes, heart notes, and base notes. The top notes are the fruity and citrus smells and the first layer of scent when you spray the perfume. These are the ones that disperse the fastest. The second layer is the heart notes, green or floral smells, that emerge when the top notes fade. Lastly, the base notes are the foundation of the scent. It comes in vanilla, musk, and woods and can last for hours or the whole day depending on how strong the concentration is.

Imagine the scent based on classification

Also, get yourself acquainted with the classification of the perfumes even without trying them on. This would be helpful especially when you buy perfumes online. For example, Bright Floral fragrances are combinations of single floral and floral bouquet groups; Green has smells of cut grass or crushed green leaves; Fruity perfumes have scents of fruits like mango and passion fruit; and Gourmand smells like desserts such as vanilla and candy.

Visit shops and test perfumes

If you are unsure whether you’ll like the smell of the fragrance or not, trying them on your skin is still the best choice. As mentioned, the smell of fragrance reacts differently on one’s skin because of body chemistry. Head to the fragrance section of a department store where there’s a wide selection of scents to choose from. Visit the mall in the morning and try out at least two different perfumes that you like by spraying each on both of your wrists. Smell the sprayed areas every hour and see how the scents change over time. The smell of the fragrance from the first few minutes it was sprayed on your skin will change after an hour or two because the top notes will evaporate.

Observe how the scent changes

The scent lasts depending on the perfume concentration and the types include Parfum, Eau de Perfum, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Cologne. Each of these is basically an indication of the concentration level of the perfume oil and says nothing about the fragrance notes. Whether you opt to get the EDP or the EDT, the key to finding your signature scent is to see how the fragrance changes in your skin and to choose the scent that resonates with your personality.

Switch your perfumes occasionally

While you feel like you must find your signature scent, know that it doesn’t automatically mean it’s the only one you’ll ever use. It’s okay to switch to other perfumes based on your mood, the season, or the occasion. For instance, musky fragrances make you feel sexy and ready for a date night while floral scents make you feel fresh and clean during the day.

If you are looking for alluring perfumes that speak of a woman’s beauty and confidence, check out Avon’s Far Away Holiday Collection.
