Here's how your phone and computer damage your skin
by Patricia Cordova

With many stuck at home during this pandemic, some have been spending a lot of time on their mobile phones, computers, and other gadgets -- whether it’s for work, learning, or entertainment. But did you know that these digital devices can also be harmful to the skin? Health experts say that the blue light, which is emitted by electronics that you are exposed to daily, may also lead to premature aging and skin damage.

What is blue light?

Commonly known to have effects on eyesight, blue light is the light emitted from our digital devices and certain types of bulbs. Blue light is also found in the sun's rays, however, the blue light from our devices is more visible as it's perceived as a cool-toned white light. It's also more pervasive to the skin than ultraviolet (UV) rays not only because of the amount of screen time that most people have on their mobile phones or laptops but also because the devices are closer to their faces.

According to an article by The New York Times, "blue light destroys collagen through oxidative stress. A chemical in skin called flavin absorbs blue light. The reaction that takes place during that absorption produces unstable oxygen molecules (free radicals) that damage the skin." Dermatology expert and celebrity doctor, Dr. Vicki Belo, even added to it by sharing a post on her Instagram saying, "Blue light from computer screens [pokes] holes on our collagen, causing wrinkles and dark spots."

How can you prevent blue light from damaging your skin?

There are different ways to prevent blue light from damaging your skin. One of the simplest ways is to limit the amount of blue light emitted on the phones. For example, you may opt for a warmer screen tone by choosing “Night Shift” mode on your Apple device.

Blue light-blocking skincare and beauty products are also available in the market that you can use to help protect your skin from its damaging effects. Here are some of our favorite picks:
