Aside from beach-capades, hiking is another outdoor activity that’s perfect for weekend getaways this summer. It’s the best season to climb nearby mountains because the skies are clearer and picture-perfect. You won’t be needing photo filters because the mountain’s vibrant foliage would be enough to make your snaps double-tap worthy.
Other than thinking of poses and photoshoot ideas, hiking essentials should be your top-of-mind priority. While hiking is fun and exciting, this outdoor activity will 100% get you exhausted so you better be ready and well-equipped.
Check this list of hiking essentials especially if you’re a beginner.
1. Hiking Shoes or Sandals

Mountains have different terrain so your footwear should be durable enough. A whole day of walking would possibly lead to hurting your ankles so your shoes should be comfortable, too. Hiking shoes and sandals have soles that provide good grip on off-road terrain.
2. Dri-Fit Shirt
It's best to wear clothes that's lightweight and absorbent to keep you feeling fresh. Dri-Fit keeps the body dry and comfortable because it’s made of polyester fabric that moves sweat away from the body and to the fabric surface, where it evaporates.
3. Trekking Pants or Shorts

Trekking or hiking pants are lightweight, have plenty of pockets, and dry fast. Many hiking pants are convertible which means the legs can zip off—turning the pants into comfortable hiking shorts.
4. Cap
Instead of wearing sunglasses to block off too much sunlight, it’s better to wear a cap to protect your head from the heat as well. The shade of the sunglasses could hinder your sight from noticing slippery rocks and plants with thorns. It’s still much safer to wear a cap so you won’t be bothered with the sunglasses falling from your face when you get sweaty.
5. Headware

A headware is a multipurpose piece of tubular lightweight, stretchy material made of polyester microfiber. It's often used in running and hiking for its many uses. It can be a scarf, a neck gaiter or dust screen, and first aid use for sprain or cuts.
6. Hiking Bag

Hiking bags have an easy-to-open system for quick access to compartments, have external straps, loops, and zippers everywhere else. Get the one with bottle pocket at the side that is flexible enough so you can take your bottle out and stow it away again without having to take your backpack off.
7. Water Bottle

An ideal day hike requires each person to bring at least a liter of water. Water bottles for hiking are wide rounded so it would be easy to refill and hold.
Trail mix and granola bars are the ideal snack for hiking because it's easy to hold and light in the tummy. It’s a combination of nuts and dried fruits that help provide the energy you need throughout the hike.
9. First Aid Kit
You’ll never know when accidents occur so even if it’s just a day of hiking, bring a first aid kit with you. Bring a small pouch with these items: 3 small packets of pills – ibuprofen, Benadryl, and an antidiarrheal – an ointment, 2-3 antiseptic wipes, 2-3 butterfly bandages, tweezers, and safety pins.

10. Be Mentally and Physically Prepared
You’ve heard a lot of stories that hiking is more difficult than imagined. While it requires physical strength, you also have to be mentally prepared to keep you focused and alert throughout the day. The trail could be too steep, muddy so you have to prepare your legs for the uphill journey.
Get in shape for hiking by devoting at least a week of exercise before your scheduled hike. You can squeeze in jogging early in the morning or at night right after work. Running builds the muscles that protect your knees and ankles. Cardio workouts help form your lung capacity so you can endure the long walks. Push-ups are good for upper body strength, especially for your back when carrying heavy stuff.
While hiking is undeniably exhausting, it's a good weekend activity to keep both your body and mind healthy. It's enjoyable to unwind and break free from the concrete jungle once in a while. Find out nearby mountains and start planning your hike with friends!
