by Gabriel Cadiz

As the summer heat leaves, rain starts pouring down more so when the rainy season arrives. The hassle of being unprepared for the rainy season is real and the costliness of the damages the rainy weather could produce is alarming. Here are some of the tips you could use to prepare for the incoming rainy monsoon season:

Remove and clean dead or weak tree branches near your roof

By regularly pruning the dead branches or any branches that may fall down on your roof and power lines, you could be rest assured of a peace of mind during storms.

Check any loose wiring inside and outside the house

Bad electrical wiring can be dangerous whether it is raining or not. The wirings should be fixed before it shorts out during a storm.

Clean your roof gutters and drainage

By making sure that your gutters and drainage pipes are clear, it will less likely cause damages and leaks on your roof.

Check your walls, roof, and ceiling for leaks and holes then patch them up

Water leaks on your walls, ceiling, and roof must be repaired as soon as possible to make sure that you will be dry during the rainy season as well as prevent more expensive damage to your home.

Make sure your doors and windows are leak-proof and sealed

A leak on your window or door might be disastrous when the rain starts to pour down. Check them beforehand for any leaks and holes that might be dangerous.

Secure your outdoor furniture and items in their proper places and keep your detached items in storage

By securing outside furniture such as stools, tables, benches, etc., you keep yourself safe from unwanted objects that could fly away during windy storms.

Use sandbags on the lower parts of your home from flooding

As a first line of protection, you can place sandbags along the lower parts of your home to prevent the flood water from getting inside.

Re-paint the house with waterproof paint

A complete repainting of your house would be a good way to prepare for this upcoming rainy season, especially at this time when the sun still shines brightly.

Keep your door mats, carpets, and rags tucked away and clean when the rain is pouring

This would keep your house clean and odorless and prevent the water from destroying your precious carpets.

Prepare a disaster kit at your home for emergencies

A disaster kit composed of a first aid kit, radio, flashlight, canned goods, clean water, and clothes would be essential for you and your family in case of dire emergencies. Keep them in an accessible and secure place in the house.
