As soon as you pour Monkey 47 in a glass, its distinct floral and fruity aroma catches your attention. It’s like perfume but made to please your taste buds.
Monkey 47 gin is distilled in the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) region of Germany. The '47' in the name comes from both the 47 botanicals used while the 'monkey' refers to the story of a British Air Force Commander who help rebuild Berlin Zoo after the World War II. The commander from the British Royal Air Force wing named Montgomery Collins, sponsored an egret monkey (portrayed on the label) and later opened a Black Forest guesthouse called 'The Wild Monkey' at which he served his own gin. Collins used the Black Forest to source his botanicals in creating the Schwarzwald Dry Gin. This German-made craft gin is part of the French wine and spirits conglomerate Pernod Ricard and just brought in the Philippines recently.
Julien Nicolay, Asia-Pacific General Manager of Black Forest Distillers, and brand ambassador Zachary Connor de Git was recently in Manila to talk about Monkey 47. They presided a casual tasting of Monkey 47 with select members of the press at the Tapenade restaurant in Discovery Primea Hotel, Makati City. Monkey 47 was served both in a wine glass as neat and as gin tonic. It's smooth and vibrant and not a traditional gin. With every sip, new flavor notes and aromas are showcased - from citrus to floral and herbal characteristics.
Some of the botanicals in Monkey 47 include honeysuckle, jasmine, lavender, lemongrass, almond, angelica, bitter orange, blackberry, cardamom, chamomile, cinnamon, lemon verbena, cloves, coriander ginger, and hawthorn berries. But the fruit that gives Monkey 47 its definitive twist is cranberry. All the basic aromas you'd want from a good gin - refreshing acidity, lasting bitter notes, and a slight sweetness - can be found among the natural strengths of this tart fruit.
Monkey 47 is now available in the Philippines at select bars and hotels. The price range starts from above PHP2,000 per bottle.
