Literally named after the coconut shell (bao) which is abundant in the country and oftentimes just thrown away, Ba.O Artisan Candles uses polished coconut shells as candle vessels unlike the usual glass, tin, or ceramic containers.

The Ba.O scented candle is a décor itself as the coconut shell vessel is thoughtfully crafted with base for support. It’s made from organic beeswax, premium-grade organic oils, and locally-sourced coconut shells. Beyond that, even the packaging is a bayong made from woven pandan leaves. These sustainable candles would make a perfect cruelty-free gift.

You get not only soothing scents with this eco-friendly candle, but a clean burn with no paraffin, toxins, petroleum, and other chemicals. Each Ba.O scented candle is different because every coconut is different, which adds to the uniqueness of the vessels.

Nina Vilvestre, candle maker and creator of Ba.O Artisan Candles, shared that she started Ba.O Artisan Candles in 2019 with the intention of customizing scented candles to her own liking. Using coconut shells as vessels led her to create Ba.O as a brand.

“I realized I didn’t have to look any further than the raw materials our country produces. We have so many cool raw materials! I asked for a few scrapped shells from the barangay marketplace (from the stall they squeeze coconut milk, locally-known as gata) and when I discovered how beautiful it looks as a candle vessel, I continued to develop the idea to make the coconut shell safe to use for containing candles.”

When asked about her inspiration, Nina said that everything in Ba.O is the pursuit to make everything explicitly Filipino.

“Our country’s raw materials and products are a testament to how woven our culture is to nature, and the things that make us special already surround and grow around us. So the coconuts, the bayong, the beeswax, are all locally sourced from different parts of the Philippines.”

Ba.O Artisan Candles is priced at PHP550 each (150g) with three therapeutic scents to choose from: Focus - a concoction of citrus and vanilla, Rest Easy – a relaxing blend of lavender and vanilla, and Yoga – a mixture of bamboo, peppermint, and green tea scents.
