by Angelique Borja

If you’ve been dye-ing to try vibrant hair colors, this locally-made semi-permanent hair dye is definitely worth the try!

Since I started sporting a pixie cut hairstyle, bleaching and coloring my hair ash gray were the next steps for me to fully express my personality. Indeed, styling your hair the way you want it is a fun way of unleashing your creativity. Although the process of bleaching comes with actually damaging your hair (and the stinging that comes with it is seriously painful), the end result is really rewarding especially if you achieved the hair color you pegged.

The fun of experimenting with hair colors has led me to finding an alternative hair dye that would not add harm to my already damaged hair. I wanted to use an organic and effective hair dye this time – then I found out about HUEMIÈRE!

The vibrant semi-permanent dye shades categorized as 'Gouache,' the lighter shades as 'Pastel,'

Scrolling through HUEMIÈRE’s Facebook page made me ecstatic to try their hair dye as the colors looked promising. True to its brand's creative wordplay of hue (color) and lumière (light), HUEMIÈRE offers 17 shades of vegan and cruelty-free hair dye as well as hair care products enriched with vital nutrients. They are CGM-friendly, stain-free, and cater to all hair types.

HUEMIÈRE features two color lines: Gouache and Soft Pastel. The Gouche line provides the most vibrant payoff for bleached hair levels 7-9, while the Soft Pastels are pre-mixed colors with a lower pigment load for direct application, suitable for bleached hair levels 9-10. The color is expected to last for 2-4 weeks or 7-10 washes with moderate or low use of sulfate-containing shampoo. Like any other hair dyes, sun exposure and salt/chlorinated water can affect the color's longevity on the hair.

Gouache can be diluted with white conditioner to increase the amount and make it slightly pastel.

I also love the fact that it’s a proudly Pinoy brand and inspired by free expression and inclusivity. The owner, Sophia Lozada, shared that this is her first business and she wanted it to be in line with her values as an artist and a member of the LGBT community.

“As an artist who is restricted from physically expressing myself to the outside world due to the requirement to wear facemasks or refrain from going outdoors, I've seen semi-permanent hair dyes as an outlet to address this, as with them, we can color code our hair and just go creative with any color without the commitment.”

Sophia has also put emphasis on sustainability, reusability, and efficiency of the products' packaging. She wanted it to be easy not just on the usability but also on the eyes. Some of the hair care products come in tin cans and plastic bottles that can be reused.

TRIAL REVIEW:

I used Cassis on the first application, then I mixed Peony and a bit of Violette for the second application to achieve a red-violet-ish hue.

Pros: The first thing I noticed with HUEMIÈRE’s semi-permanent hair dye was the smell. Compared with other hair dyes, it’s fragrant but not irritating to the nose. The dye wasn’t headache inducing and it didn’t stain my skin.

You can also mix two different dyes to achieve the hair color that you want! I mixed Peony (Soft Pastel) and a bit of Violette (Gouche) to get a low tone red-violet color.

The Berry Vanille Colour Safe Shampoo and Conditioner smelled great, too! They’re in a spill-proof bottle, as well as the Blacnhe Purple Keratin Toner and the Cocotier Hair Primer.

For the price, it’s affordable compared with other well-known hair dye brands with the same size. HUEMIÈRE semi-permanent is only at PHP249 (110ml).

Cons: I’m surprised that the 110ml dye wasn’t enough for my pixie cut hair. I already emptied the whole tube but the hair dye only went on the top half of my head. With this, I just improvised another color by mixing two colors for it to appear an ombre effect. The result wasn’t so bad though! I strongly recommend purchasing two tubes of the same color or more if you have shoulder-length hair.

The Soft Pastel line required level 9-10 bleach for the color to look good on the hair. Mine was pre-bleached with level 9 lightness but the Cassis dye (Soft Pastel) was still too pale for my hair and didn’t achieve the lavender-ish tone that I pegged (but it was okay). I think you have to achieve level 10 bleach for the Soft Pastel line.

I wish there were bigger sizes of Blanche Purple Keratin Toner and Cocotier Hair Primer as I would use them very often!

THE VERDICT: It’s a 9/10 for me! Although one tube wasn’t enough for a pixie short hair (or because I got thick hair), you can just purchase two tubes instead. For me, I’d still buy from HUEMIÈRE as I feel safe because their products are free from harmful toxins and chemicals found in most regular human hair dyes. I think this would be my go-to hair color and I highly recommend their products!

I recommend using at least two tubes of HUEMIÈRE for short hair and bleach level 10 if you opt for Soft Pastel line.
