8 Life-Changing Organizing Tips According to a Professional Organizer
by Angelique Borja

It takes a lot of time keeping your own bedroom clean and tidy, how much more if organizing the whole house?

There are hacks for spaces of varying shapes and sizes. The most-visited rooms (bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens) and popular nooks and crannies (drawers, closets, and desks). The choice is yours if you want to declutter the whole house at once, or pick a few organizing methods to tidy your home one small step at a time. As a result, you might even free up some extra space.

In organizing stuff at home, pay attention to how you do everyday tasks and try to find an easier way of doing them. To help you out in tiding up your home, Manila-based professional organizer Issa Reyes can help you out in sorting stuff through her blog Neat Obsessions. She’s a Konmari Consultant-in-Training and a Certified Professional Organizer by International Organization of Professional Organizers from IAPO.

Here are some of her tips to tackle clutter in every part of your home.

Organize open shelves

There’s always more to organizing than arranging by color, height, sizes, and shapes according to Issa. Own your space and your home by telling stories with the pieces that you have. Create stories or preserve memories by clustering items in your open shelving. Dedicate each self for family, travel adventures, or for your favorite books.

Organize and label

Labelling items is more than just placing stickers on containers and canisters. It is establishing a new system that allows you to be efficient with your routine and to be mindful and grateful with what you have at home.

Organize the pantry

How to maintain a well-organized pantry? Issa recommends creating zones and decanting are the basic steps in achieving a tidy pantry. First is to create zones by sorting the items together. Zones in this pantry are baking, breakfast, canned goods, cooking essentials, snacks. Creating zones will give you a quick mental inventory in knowing what’s running out or what you need to add/buy.

Next is decanting items such as sugar, coffee, cereals, baking soda, flour, rice, etc. No need to decant pasta, macaroni since most of the time you consume the entire bag in one cooking. Only transfer those items that you normally refill.

Organize tableware

According to Issa, efficiency should be top priority in organizing your active tableware. Put plates, glasses, and cutleries close to each other so you can set the table almost effortlessly. Setting the table should be a breeze, more so because we do it at least thrice a day.

Organize bed sheet and linens

Issa recommends in giving the linen closet a "luxury-feel goodness” by organizing them by set in travel bags. Storing linens this way will help improve efficiency in changing sheets, avoid mismatched linens, and keep it dust-free.

Organize documents

Organize your paper documents by clustering them into three: personal documents (birth certificates, medical records, insurance, property documents, etc.), household documents (appliances’ warranties, manuals, and bills) and business documents (business permits, receipts, employee documents). Label them to help you locate the files easily should you need them.

However, be cautious in disposing papers bearing personal information. Shred them and make sure that your personal and other sensitive details such as bank account cannot be read anymore. Shift to digital. Digitize your documents for backup. Go for paperless options if possible. This is a great step in helping the environment and to minimize paper clutter in your home.

Organize the laundry area

Don’t you just love an organized laundry area with everything within your reach? Doing the laundry is tiring and takes up most of the day, so having all you the stuff need in one place is a lot of help. Cluster all the hangers per size and color and place them in bins or hang them in the corner. Organize a soap station with all the different detergents, fabric conditioner, and bleach. Having a tiered laundry bin is a space saver in separating colored from white clothes.

Organize under the sink

Maximize your kitchen by utilizing the cabinet under the sink. You can use it to store cleaning materials such as dishwashing liquid and kitchen towels as well as your stash of sponges and trash bags. Organize these items by placing them in transparent bins.
